Account reconciliation software for Excel users
Most software sold as "account reconciliation" is built for a finance team closing the books out of an ERP: preparers, reviewers, sign-offs and an audit trail. Many reconciliations are smaller than that — a bank export against a ledger, a payout report against an order list, the same two files every month. This page sorts the options by the job you actually have, including the ones where TableDI 2 is the wrong answer.
Two different jobs are called reconciliation
Close management. A controller's team reconciles hundreds of balance sheet accounts at month-end. Balances come from the ERP, each account has a preparer and a reviewer, and auditors want evidence of who signed off and when. BlackLine, FloQast, Trintech and Numeric build for this: checklists, approvals, ERP connectors, dashboards across the whole close.
File reconciliation. One person has two or more files — a bank statement and the cash ledger, a payment processor's payouts and the invoices, a supplier's statement and the purchase ledger. They match rows on a key, list what doesn't match, explain the differences and hand a report to someone. Next month the same files arrive with new rows. This is the job most "reconcile in Excel" searches are about, and it is the one TableDI 2 does.
The options side by side
| TableDI 2 | Close platforms | Accounting app | Excel | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Examples | A desktop app for Mac | BlackLine, FloQast, Trintech, Numeric | Bank reconciliation in QuickBooks or Xero | XLOOKUP, Power Query |
| Built for | One person's recurring file reconciliation | A finance team's month-end close | Bank feeds against the books kept there | Anything, once |
| Data from | Excel, CSV, TSV, and PDF statements with a text layer | ERP connectors, uploads | The bank feed and the ledger inside it | Whatever you paste in |
| Sign-off | No — single user by design | Preparer, reviewer, audit trail | Varies | No |
| Next month | Drop in the new files, check the preflight, run the same rules | Recurring tasks in the close checklist | Continues from the last reconciled balance | Rebuild, or hope the formulas still point at the right columns |
| Price | Free for one saved job; $99 once for more | BlackLine and FloQast publish none: a quote after a demo, usually annual | Part of the subscription | Already paid for |

If a close platform fits, buy the close platform
When several people prepare and review, when the ledger lives in NetSuite or Sage Intacct, or when an auditor needs to see sign-offs, a close platform earns its price and TableDI 2 is not a substitute. It has one user, no approval step and no ERP connector — it reads files.
Likewise, if your bank account is already connected to QuickBooks or Xero and the question is "does the bank agree with the books", reconcile there. That is what the feature is for.
What reconciling looks like in TableDI 2
TableDI 2 is a desktop app for file work you redo every period: it keeps your sources, rules and delivery as a job, so next month you drop in the new files and run it again. Everything runs on your own machine.
The first period
Drop in both files. You answer four things: which column is the key, how far apart two amounts may be and still count as the same, where next month's files will be, and a name. The job's rules are ordinary steps you can read and change: tidy the columns, match on the key (one to one, or one to many added up, for payments in instalments), compare the amounts, sum up, deliver.
Every period after
Before anything runs, the preflight compares this period's files with last period's: which columns match, what was renamed or went missing, blank or duplicate keys, and how the row count moved. Then the same rules run — with no AI in the run.
What didn't match
Rows that need a person wait on the Exceptions tab, grouped by cause — only in the first file, amounts that disagree, a blank or repeated key — with the file and row they came from. For each one you change the source file, waive it for this period with a written reason (the reason goes into the delivery), or mark it to do. In the lifetime edition you can also turn the cause into a rule, or carry the row to next period: it joins next month's matching and closes by itself when its pair turns up.
One detail that matters with real invoice numbers: a carried row is matched first only when its amount agrees. If next month a different invoice reuses the same number, the carried row doesn't take it and invent a difference — the new invoice matches its own payment, and the carried item keeps waiting for its own pair.
The delivery
An Excel report with summary, detail and exceptions sheets, or a CSV, written to the folder you choose. The job keeps a run log of every period: when it ran, the difference, and which version of the rules it used.
What it costs
Free has no time limit and no account: unlimited one-off tasks, export with no row limit, and one saved job you rerun every period. The lifetime edition is $99 once for one machine (movable) — or $49 for a year or $7.99 for a month, neither of which renews by itself; it adds more jobs, rules made from exceptions, carrying items to the next period, delivery templates and the history of every period.
Where TableDI 2 is the wrong tool
- You need reviewers and sign-offs, or evidence for SOX or an external audit of the close process.
- Balances should come straight from an ERP rather than from exported files.
- Your team works on Windows — TableDI 2 is macOS only today; Windows is in progress.
- Your statements are scanned images. PDFs need a text layer; ask the bank for CSV.
Try the matching first, in your browser
The free reconcile two tables tool does one period of the same matching — matched, amount differences, only on one side — in a browser tab, with nothing uploaded. The bank reconciliation template gives you the Excel layout if you want to keep doing it by hand.
Questions people ask
What is account reconciliation software?
Software that checks one record of balances or transactions against another — a bank statement against the ledger, a subledger against the general ledger — and tracks what doesn't agree until it is explained. The enterprise kind adds a close checklist, reviewer sign-off and an audit trail; the lighter kind matches files and reports the differences.
How much does account reconciliation software cost?
BlackLine and FloQast do not publish prices: you get a quote after a demo, typically on an annual contract. Bank reconciliation inside QuickBooks or Xero is part of their subscription. TableDI 2 is free for one saved job and $99 once for more, on one machine at a time.
Is Excel good enough for account reconciliation?
For a single reconciliation, yes — XLOOKUP or Power Query will match two lists. It gets fragile when the same reconciliation repeats: new rows, renamed columns, items carried over from last month and notes on why something was waived all have to be redone by hand each time. That repetition is what a saved job removes.
Can TableDI 2 reconcile bank statements?
Yes, from CSV or Excel exports, or from PDF statements that contain text. Scanned PDFs can't be read. Match on a reference column, set a tolerance for amounts, and the rows that don't match wait on the Exceptions tab with the file and row they came from.
Do my files leave my computer?
No. TableDI 2 reads the files on your Mac and keeps its data in a normal folder on your disk. AI is optional, uses your own key, and sends column names and at most 50 rows to your provider only when you ask it to draft a job.
